As we approach International Women's Day, it's crucial to acknowledge not only the progress women have made but also the challenges many still face. Among these challenges is the often overlooked issue of loneliness, which, despite its prevalence, remains stigmatised and underestimated.
According to a report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)[1], social isolation and loneliness have emerged as significant concerns in Australian society, affecting individuals across all age groups and backgrounds. However, young women, in particular, are experiencing heightened levels of loneliness:
AIHW's analysis of the HILDA Survey data reveals that more than one in four women aged 18–24 agreed with the statement "I often feel very lonely" in 2021, marking an increase from less than one in five in 2015.
In a recent article, Women's Agenda[2] emphasises that loneliness transcends beyond those living alone, permeating various demographics irrespective of relationship status or living arrangements.
While statistics shed light on the prevalence and impact of loneliness among women, it's equally vital to underscore the resilience and solidarity that women exhibit in navigating these challenges together.
The report ‘Unveiling a Silent Struggle[3]’ by Friends for Good notes a growing number of women seeking support services to cope with loneliness, signalling a positive shift in acknowledging and addressing the issue. Beyond seeking professional assistance, women are actively supporting one another through informal peer groups and community initiatives, strengthening the bonds of sisterhood to combat loneliness.
Women's circles have emerged as powerful platforms for connection and mutual support, offering a safe and nurturing space for sharing experiences, vulnerabilities, and triumphs. Whether through storytelling, art therapy, or simply lending a compassionate ear, these circles foster a sense of belonging that transcends loneliness.
Moreover, online communities and social media platforms serve as vital support hubs for women facing loneliness, enabling connections, resource-sharing, and words of encouragement. These digital spaces can provide a lifeline for some people who are feeling isolated geographically or socially.
By nurturing a sense of belonging and understanding, these networks empower women to confront their feelings of loneliness without fear of judgment or shame.
This International Women's Day, let's celebrate the resilience and strength of women as they navigate the complexities of loneliness. Let's commit to breaking the silence, challenging stigma, and fostering a community where every woman feels acknowledged, heard, and connected. Together, we can cultivate a world where loneliness becomes an opportunity for empathy, understanding, and genuine human connection.
